A widow, working feverishly at digging holes for plants on neglected railway land alongside picturesque Lavender Bay, was hardly a story, let alone a secret. But in time the plantings covered more of the urban "waste land" and a garden grew, and the garden to locals came to be known as "Wendy's Garden". The widow in question was Wendy Whitely.

The walk starts at the Jeffrey Street, Kirribilli ferry station, which is a little more than five minutes by ferry from Circular Quay. It follows the foreshore of the harbour around Olympic Drive under the Sydney Harbour Bridge - with facing views of the Sydney Opera House, Circular Quay and Dawes Point - to Luna Park and then on to Lavender.

WENDY'S SECRET GARDEN HISTORY Wendy and her celebrated artist husband, Brett Whiteley, moved to Lavender Bay in 1970. "We found it completely by accident," Wendy says. "It was very quiet and nobody really knew about it because people couldn't be bothered walking down the stairs and turning around to walk back up."

The secret garden is an easy 10 minute walk from North Sydney station, best accessed via the stairs on Lavender St (opposite Walker St). For a more inspiring walk, take the Peter Kingston Walkway from Luna Park along the water's edge. Peter is a local artist who has created the miniature sculptures displayed along the walkway.
